Effects of Open Road limits
I was upset to see the NT place the 130 open road limit. Not only did it rermove the chance for those who wanted to drive quickly and safely to do so legally, but from my own experience I believe it will increase the average speed. When Victoria introduced open road limits of 100 km/h after having a prima facie limit of 80 km/h, many drivers who had previously driven safely at 80 and felt comfortable in doing so, now felt intimidated into driving at the new limit of 100. For many of them, it exceeded their competence and so they limited their driving, or drive wiht a fear that they were no longer as capable as before. In the NT, I think the same will happen, particularly with drivers who come from a country where lower limits normally apply (look, it's safe for anyone to do 130, so we can legally and safely drive at that speed!) who otherwise would have taken the derestriction sign to travel at their normal driving speed. Apart from anything else, signs reminding drivers to drive on the left, particularly in the longer, more remote sections of road, would help overseas drivers. Others, who don't wear seatbelts, overload vehicles or drive drunk or under the effects of drugs, are not going to be affected by signed changes anyway. I would have thought that if the NT government was serious about road safety initiatives, they would have introduced them one at a time, at least a year apart, and seen what effect they had. Then there would be a chance to remove ineffective intiatives and harshen effective ones - and everyone would be able to see and understand why the laws were changed (or not changed, as the case may be).
