In Australia we were fortunate to have our democracy handed to us without the necessity to fight for it.  Sadly in the 21st Century successive governments have continually undermined our basic freedoms and continue to tax us in every way they can.

The motorist has been, and is a massive cash cow for governments.  Continually we are brain washed to believe that the introduction of restrictive laws, are for our own good when in fact they are just another tax.  There is a huge body of evidence that clearly proves this and I encourage you to read some of the articles.  You will be appalled, but what can you do I hear you say?

Well, on the 13/2/07 at 10.00pm we held a public rally at NT Parliament House to oppose the introduction of an open road speed limit in the Northern Territory.  Enough is enough the line has been drawn in the sand.

We need your help so our politicians know that we will not be conned into giving them more of our hard earned money.  They can’t pass a law based upon a flawed report and then have the audacity to rush it through parliament without debate.

So get the word out there, print out the petition and get as many signatures as you can. Remember to post it to us at the PO Box on the bottom of the petition.  Wear our T shirts/badges and come to parliament when we table our petition (we will announce the date in due coarse) and watch this historic battle.

Let us show the rest of Australia that we will not be beaten into submission.  We are the last stand and I look forward to your comments and support.

Re: Welcome

The speed limit should NOT be changed on the open road, its ridiculous! I dont like this change at all. Its all about power within the government not saving lifes... give our freedom back!

Re: Welcome
I was shocked when those ads were on tv about our road toll, that was untill i did some research of my own, this is what i found;

FACT: "NT road crash death rate over the four years is 39 deaths per 100,000 Indigenous persons and 12 deaths per 100,000 non-Indigenous".

FACT: "NT has the highest incidence of unlicensed drivers in the world.
During the last few years under the current Police Commissioners rule we have seen a big increase in deaths of Territorians on roads that already have speed limits. This is particularly evident in Darwin"

The only 'fact' advertised is: "One person is killed and nine seriously injured on territory roads every week"

The Indigenous are killed from single vehicle roll overs in the middle of the scrub, sleeping on roadways & overloading with passengers. It doesnt matter how somebody dies on the road, in a vehicle or not, it still counts.

Some tourists also are a problem with overseas tourists driving on the wrong side of the road, in cars they arnt familiar with, but thats only a small number.

Now the top end has a "traffic branch" of course the numbers will look better after this revamp, i see them every day booking drivers that usually would have got away scott free.

Please don't punish me for this, I've invested thousands on rider training, gear & the bike to enjoy MY territory, its a vast land that i wont be bothered to travel & see anymore as it will be too uncomfortable without enough wind to hold my weight up from the handlebars at 130k.

I proudly call myself a Territorian now, after living here for the last 13 years. Prior to that I called South Australia home. I have discussions with a variety of people about the outrage that is the enforced speed limit on open Territory roads.

I have had a couple of people say that they don't drive faster than 130 kmph, so what does it matter to them? This is how the rot starts. I remember when the speed limit in SA was 120kmph - a reasonable speed in many people's eyes. Then it became 110 kmph. Next it was 100 kmph. The pattern is there for all to see - you just need to open your eyes and stop listening to the lies portrayed by a bogus report that OFFERS NO EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT IT'S OUTRAGEOUS CLAIMS!!!

What is now 130 kmph, will soon become 120 kpph, then 110 and so on and so forth. Don't let these vandals and money grubbers deceive you. The facts are not about public safety - they are about revenue raising and stripping the Territorians of their unique rights. I'll be at the rally at Parliament House on Tuesday morning to join those who, like me won't let them chip away at my Territorian civil liberties without a damn good fight. It's my right!

Re: Welcome

Hi all, just registered here & thought I'd chuck in my 2c worth.

I'm not a Territorian, I'm from Sydney actually, but I do love the NT. One of the things I used to love about it was the lack of a posted speed limit on the open road. So much so that in 1994 I was a competitor in the Cannonball Run, and returned in '95 as a competitor in the Round Australia Rally. In both events I was driving a Mazda Rx-2 and coming from Sydney it was a real buzz to overtake the Highway Patrol at 180km/h without fear of getting locked up.

A few years ago I returned to the Territory on my Suzuki Hayabusa and during the time I spent in the Territory my average cruising speed on the bike was around 220-240km/h. Overtaking the Highway Patrol on the 'busa with the needle on 290km/h was awesome! Can't do that anymore! The best part about it was that every time I flew past the boys in blue [ok, khaki- but their XR8's were blue] all I got from them was a friendly wave from the driver, because although I overtook them at high speed, I did it in a safe manner. Generally when approaching I'd put my right indicator on, flash my high beam a couple of times and move out and around them in a nice gentle arc, giving a toot on the horn as I passed. As I said, every time I got a friendly wave in reply. Why can't it just stay that way? That was one of the things that made the territory so inviting as a tourist destination to the motoring enthusiast.

Personally I think it's crazy having a limit of 130 up there. I've driven and ridden a lot of country miles, many of them at night and with the distances involved in the Centre and the Top End, all a speed limit is going to achieve is increased levels of driver fatigue, and revenue of course. An increase in fatigue will mean an increase in crashes, and almost certainly an increase in deaths and serious injuries. It's funny how many people told me I was crazy for riding a motorcycle up the Stuart Hwy at night, [I rode right thru from Broken Hill to Alice Springs overnight, 20hrs all up including a 45min snooze somewhere between Marla and the border- it's all about driving to the conditions] and I just said to them, "The high beam on this bike is incredible- even at 300km/h you don't run out of light, but up here I'm only cruising along at 70 at night. [I rode right thru from Broken Hill to Alice Springs overnight, 20hrs all up including a 45min snooze somewhere between Marla and the border- it's all about driving to the conditions]

The other downside is that all the major car manufacturers that used to come out to do their high-temp, high-speed testing will now just have to go to South Africa instead and spend their money over there. Of course, you guys already know all this but I just thought you might like to hear it from a non-local. There's lots of us in other states that support your cause, so good luck with the battle. I just hope someone sees the light of day before too many people lose their lives.

Re: Welcome

Thank you for your post and refreshing content.  It is good to know that other people from interstate realise the importance of keeping our freedoms.

LAWS MUST BE BASED UPON EVIDENCE NOT REVENUE AND UNINFORMED OPINION.

Once again thank you and welcome

Re: Welcome

Hello guys,

I can just congratulate you for all what you are doing. I m actually not from the NT and not from Australia (I'm from Switzerland). However, last year I came to travel in Australia with my girlfriend and once we left WA we made our way to Darwin, without any restriction completly free!

I did so enjoy in Australia the feeling of freedom, it's so important. Here in europe people are getting crazy and putting restrictions after restrictions ( ok Germany doesn't have speed limits everywhere yet. But unfortunately EU is putting a lot of pressure on them to introduce limits.), I really do hope you are not starting to suffer from this trend as well!

Keep fighting for your action which is just remarkable! Continue to pressure NT government in order to enjoy again the liberty. As I planned to come back to your country very soon, I do hope to feel free again!

Good luck,

Julien

Re: Welcome

Thank you Julien, your support is much appreciated.  If you get time please sign our petition at the Cold Rock Ice Cream store in Darwin.

We need to send a clear message to our politicians that we will not stand for our libertys taken away based upon no evidence.
