Re: Media Release 130 Limit Road Toll Up 58%
This is a perfect example of the wrong way people perceive things no-one says you have to go flat out because there is a an open speed limit, if someone says go put your head in the fire would you, pardon the pun this isn't a personal attack but think about what you have said here, the fact is do you think a speed limit would matter to this particular hertz car rentee in any case, the point i am making is are you or are you not an adult so therefore isn't it your decision or fault which ever applies at what you do on any road you are using. Can't you decide for yourself what speed suits you, don't you want the CHOICE at least. Look at the road toll for god sake it is well and truly speaking for itself the open speed limit was NEVER responsible for the road death toll, implicated in Parliament by the Cheif Minister to Bannish the Open Limit in the first place for goodness sake, and the true facts speak again for themselves because THE OPEN SPEED LIMIT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DEATH TOLL RIGHT NOW DOES IT< OPEN YOUR EYES>  it is no seatbelts and alcohol i know this to be certain i am in the right location to know this fact. If you also look into some of the speeding accidents they are also linked with drugs and alcohol, am i the only one that reads HEADLINES. There are idiots on the roads no-one denies that but why do we all have to pay the price of STUPIDITY they are still killing themselves aren't they with 130km/hr. The majority of the death toll now  isn't all to do with the open road it's nearly all inexperienced tourist drivers, dirt roads with overloaded vehicles and suburbia egomania. These people on this website have hard evidence of these facts thats the whole point they are making, if the Minister was so confident about the change why didn't she put it to the vote i'll tell ya why she would have lost and she knew it, actually check for yourself how many road deaths were attributed to the OPEN SPEED LIMIT when Claire Martin had the bill passed i did. It's all here on this website see for yourself The GOVERNMENT LIED they blamed the death toll on the the  OPEN LIMIT is was not and never was responsible for the death toll numbers Claire Martin stood up in Parliament as CHEIF MINISTER and put forward, she openly and blatantly LIED see for yourself, the info these people have came from Claires own department that is why i am so angry she turned into a gaint black snake to her own voter's. Ask other people around you if they are happy about the change you might be surprised yourself. I want the Open Speed Limit back and so do three quarters of the NORTHERN TERRITORY, we can't all be wrong surely.

Re: Media Release 130 Limit Road Toll Up 58%

What we need to do is ALL write a letter or email to your local member and tell them how you feel and that you will vote based upon their response.

At the end of the day they are our elected officials to do what we want.

The fact is, the imposition of a speed limit on the open road has done nothing to lower the road toll in fact there is evidence that it has made the problem worse.  People now are forced to drive late into the night more chance of hitting animals increased fatigue etc

More press about the NT road toll. I like the comments from the CLP. I hope they have the guts to follow through when they win the next election!!

NT road toll at 20 year high

Posted Wed Dec 31, 2008 5:33pm AEDT

The Northern Territory Government isn't ruling out tougher penalties for road-related offences next year in an effort to reduce the road toll.

The Territory's road toll is 75, the worst in more than two decades.

The Acting Chief Minister Marion Scrymgour says the Government increased driver fines and penalties this year, and will continue its education campaigns.

"It is tragic. We don't want to see these accidents increase. If it means increasing the fines, that is an option that's available to Government and Government will take every measure available to them to try and look at how do we reduce those numbers from increasing."

But she says the community must also take responsibility.

"As Government you can put in place these reforms and hope your message is getting out there.

"Unfortunately you do have a group that will disregard those messages regardless of what you put in place.

"We can only encourage Territorians, everybody, before you get behind the wheel of a car to heed the warnings to be safe and to stay safe."

The Opposition says it remains committed to abolishing speed limits on Territory highways despite the soaring road toll.

Transport spokesman Adam Giles says drink drivers and people not wearing seat belts, not speed, is the main cause of road fatalities.

"Our policy at present is the creation of an open speed on the Stuart Highway, and we will continue that policy.

"However I have said we are prepared to review our policies in partnership with the Northern Territory Government to come up with a much safer package for the Northern Territory people."

He says the key to lowering the road toll is education.

"We have to get into the schools and educate school students on the problems of drink driving and merits of road safety, we can encourage younger drivers to purchase lower powered vehicles."
