Safety Gear to Avoid Accidents
Sun Jun 14, 2009 - Tragically, a man has been killed while helping to direct traffic on the Stuart Highway around a fatal smash involving a road train loaded with cattle.

Keepleft, you have a good idea there mate, where you advise that drivers should carry a safety triangle, my BMW has one & so does the mrs Mercedes. Although i reckon to complement the triangle, a Safety Vest may have helped to avoid the above tragedy

Thanks for that, take a look here:-
http://www.nbntv.com.au/index.php/2009/07/14/calls-for-improved-roadside-safety/

See also the provided links in my post re the subject at the NBN TV site.

Also hope readers are able to view the NBN TV News (Newcastle) video, all to do with codecs they say.

I've posted some detail re the items, and each item was issued by way of advocacy to NT Roads Minister, that office has forwarded it all the NT Road Safety folk. Had an email from them, and to date, the talk is positive. I'll update as required.

Dealing same with NSW, certain that if sitting power does not further it, then I know the LIB's will. This stuff should have all been accomplished, nationally, early 2003/4.

Purchase a hazard-warning triangle for use at crash scenes and breakdowns, mandatory in Europe, the triangle is used to improve on the warning time given to approaching traffic. I suggest Hella Part Number 2901.

Re: Safety Gear to Avoid Accidents
Arrive at an accident, take triangle out of the boot, walk/run down the road a certain "safe" distance, place triangle down and run back to render assistance? The triangle (only 1 in your cars etc, trucks carry minimum of 3) is meant for when you get a flat tyre or break down and even then I wouldn't trust them (other road users slowing down or giving you room)

Remember, Danger to yourself first is more important! I think that parking your vehicle away / off the road with hazard lights on and having a reflective vest is a better option. I have one in the Ute plus a full first aid kit.

Most people that I see on the road do not even bother about the triangles warning of wash outs etc or even the bright orange witches hats for road workers.

Re: Safety Gear to Avoid Accidents
Well the triangle you use would be behind the accident, on its side of the road, if only one lane. Also the use of a High Visibly jacket would be handy to use. Along with you vehicle with hazard lights activated would greatly reduce the chance of somebody flying into the accident.

But if you don't think that would help, then hey, you can just keep on driving & don't render assistance, but that's against the law, so what else would you do?

Re: Safety Gear to Avoid Accidents
The hazard warning triangles do work and are proven overseas. Not only is one mandatory per car in EU, with Spain mandating two to "UNECE R27" EUROPEAN SPECIFICATION, but China and India are on board in the same manner.

The warning triangle item (as is the "EN 471 Spec 'safety vests' for cars, and a first aid kit - to national standards) is up for world adoption in an amendment to the 1968 "UN Convention on Road Traffic".

The triangles are placed, where safe and practicable, *before* the scene of a crash or breakdown. They are to be used with a vehicles hazard-warning lamps IF they still function.

A recent amendment to the Australian Road Rules (226 etc) has updated placement maximums for high-speed roads from historic 150 metres from source, to 200 metres (steps) instead. A person existing a vehicle should first wear the/a safety vest that is to be kept inside the cabin, before walking to place the triangle.

REFERENCE to "hazard warning triangles in this thread does NOT relate to warning triangles purely compliant with AS3790. This Standard is based on old US DOT Specification going back to the days of the 55Mph (88km/h) double nickle maximum speed limit that President Clinton rescinded back in 1995, that had been imposed back in 74'.

Basically the Australian Spec triangles are lousy photometric performers. The mentioned UNECE 27R Spec 'Euro' triangles ARE the world standard and are much better photometric performers, and far less inclined to blow over or away than the US DOT/AS3790 type. In any case, AS3790 "Accepts" the Euro Spec triangle as an alternative!

HELLA Pt No. 2901 is for a Euro-Spec triangle. The same item is also sold through FORD and MITSUBISHI dealers nationwide.

BUNNINGS stores nationwide in their "Road Traffic Control" section, sell Euro-Spec warning triangle for $9.90. Item is sold in a red plastic stowage case.

Auto Parts Stores: Order PRO-KIT Item No. RG9212 is another Euro triangle sample, about $21 retail.

SUPERCHEAP have begun stocking a Euro triangle similar to the Bunnings item, $9.90. They still have old $3-00 junk triangles they are running out, avoid them.

SAFETY VESTS: Cheap stores such as HOT DOLLAR sell the same "HIGH VISIBILITY SAFETY VESTS" you have in ALL EU registered cars. They costs about $4.50-7.99 through that group, and others. Cheap insurance. Look for the "EN471" label inside the collar. Buy two for your car, minimum.

I have NO relationship with any of these companies whatsoever, road safety advocacy only.
